Susquehanna Square

When Susquehanna Square was developed by Community Ventures, its goal was to support North Philadelphia’s low-income population, not to garner an award. Impressively, the 37-unit multi-generational, affordable housing development, achieved both.

Located northwest of Temple University’s campus, three new-construction buildings serve a variety of populations, and all units are designed for low-income individuals earning less than 60% of the area’s median income. There are 17 one-bedroom, 14 two-bedroom, three three-bedroom, and three four-bedroom units. Community Lenders provided the long-term financing of Susquehanna Square.

Community Ventures partnered with Grands as Parents to target grandparent-headed households looking for an affordable place to live. Five units are leased to grandparents caring for grandchildren. Additionally, eight units are specifically designated for people experiencing homelessness.

Susquehanna Square earned Community Ventures the PACDC 2021 Blue Ribbon award, which recognizes outstanding achievement by community development corporations that advance PACDC’s vision: “An equitable city where every Philadelphian lives, works, and thrives in a neighborhood that offers an excellent quality of life.”

Families and individuals who call Susquehanna Square home are in close proximity to schools, public playgrounds, a movie theater, supermarkets, and social service providers. Adjacent to the SEPTA Broad Street Line stop, residents can easily travel around Philadelphia.

Susquehanna Square received both Enterprise Green Communities and Energy Star certification and includes a green roof to manage stormwater and help lower utility expenses for residents.

“One of the many strengths of Susquehanna Square is its access to a wide range of significant amenities in the surrounding community. These amenities include Temple University and its associated commercial area, schools, public playgrounds, a movie theater, two modern supermarkets, and social service providers.”
